Fall Project: Lava Lamps

Our friend, Ray (of Ray’s Finds) has a small collection of Lava Lamps. Recently he shared a pic of a new acquisition to the collection with us. I was struck by the iconic, unusual and FUN shape of these retro throwbacks to a barely bygone era! So I immediately thought: Quilt Block!
Lava Lamps and Love Beads Small
I started to play with my batiks and found the luminous (those fabrics with both very light and very dark) batiks work very well in conveying the feeling and appearance of the lights.  It is also important that the Batik just be a hand dyed with no additional patterns or design… So it will look like a Lava Lamp!

The blocks were so well received in class that I was convinced to design and teach a quilt in the fall of 2013. See the love beads in the border.  I think the cornerstones of the border need some of those big daisies so popular in the 60s.  So there is still a bit of design work to do, but the mock up (this computer generated image has only two different blocks, but the finished result will have much more variety!) above should suffice to whet your appetite for this project!

I hope you will join us in making this simple and eye-catching quilt!  Instruction will begin Saturday, September 7, 2013.
