The States Of Modern: Utah, The Beehive State

The name “Utah” is derived from the name of the Ute tribe. It means “people of the mountains” in the Ute language.
In 1847 Brigham Young led a group of people to the Salt Lake Valley to reestablish in Utah the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, also know as The Mormons.

States Utah

Over the next 22 years, more than 70,000 pioneers crossed the plains and settled in Utah.  For the first few years, Brigham Young and the thousands of early settlers of Salt Lake City struggled to survive. The arid desert land was deemed by the Mormons as desirable as a place where they could practice their religion without harassment.
But the land is not without beauty and its place in history. The Golden Spike marked the spot where the First Transcontinental Railroad was completed in the U.S. on May 10, 1869 in Promontory, Utah.  And by 1896 Utah gained admission to the Union of the United States.  Today, we quilters know that there are many wonderful quilt shops spread throughout the Beehive State!
