The States Of Modern: South Carolina
Just a note: There will be no States Of Modern Block posted next Thursday. I will be at a quilt retreat. Keep your eye here though, as I will try to post from a quilt shop or two!
This week we visit gorgeous South Carolina. Since Francisco Gordillo first landed on its shores in 1521, the land has been claimed by Spain, France and England.
The British can be credited with naming the area Carolana (Land of Charles) after King Charles gave the colony to Robert Heath. John Locke, the English philosopher, wrote the colony’s constitution. Eventually, the colony split into North and South Carolina due to the Settler’s wanting political power. South Carolina has a rich history from the Revolution War through the Civil War (which began at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor) and through to present day. Today, Charleston is often awarded “America’s Most Friendly City.”

Capitol: Columbia
State Bird: Carolina Wren
Flag: Asked by the Revolutionary Council of Safety in the fall of 1775 to design a flag for the use of South Carolina troops, Col. William Moultrie chose a blue which matched the color of their uniforms and a crescent which reproduced the silver emblem worn on the front of their caps. The palmetto tree was added later to represent Moultrie’s heroic defense of the palmetto-log fort on Sullivan’s Island against the attack of the British fleet on June 28, 1776.
