The States OF Modern: North Carolina: The Tar Heel State

In 1584, Elizabeth I granted a charter to Sir Walter Raleigh, for whom the North Carolina state capital is named, for land in present-day North Carolina (then part of the territory of Virginia).  This was the second American territory which the English attempted to colonize. Raleigh established two colonies on the coast in the late 1580s, but both failed. The fate of the “Lost Colony” of Roanoke Island remains one of the most widely debated mysteries of American history and they are still actively researching its history today. Virginia Dare, the first English child to be born in North America, was born on Roanoke Island on August 18, 1587; Dare County is named for her.

The exact etymology of the North Carolina nickname, Tar Heel, is unknown, but most believe its roots come from the fact that tar, pitch, and turpentine created from the vast pine forests were some of North Carolina’s most important exports early in the state’s history.
Early in the last century, North Carolina was the site of the first successful controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air flight by the Wright brothers, near Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903.  I wonder if Orville and Wilbur could have thought that less than 70 years later, man would land on the moon!

Other North Carolina Facts:
Capitol: Raleigh
Admission to Statehood:
November 21, 1789
Bird: Cardinal
Flag: The flag of North Carolina consists of a blue union, containing a white star between the letters N and C in gilt. The circle containing the star is one-third the width of the union. The fly of the flag consists of two equally proportioned bars; the upper bar is red, the lower bar white. Above the star in the center of the union there is a gilt scroll in semi-circular form, containing in black letters this inscription “May 20th, 1775”, and below the star there is a similar scroll containing in black letters the inscription: “April 12th, 1776”.
Flower: Dogwood
Largest Cities: Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro

Our block design is based on the flag, but pared down.  It is sharp and simplistic and… pretty easy to make!
