The States Of Modern: Michigan

Interesting… Wikipedia points out that Michigan is the only state to consist of two peninsulas. The Lower Peninsula, to which the name Michigan was originally applied, is often noted to be shaped like a mitten. The Upper Peninsula (often referred to as “the U.P.”) is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac, a five-mile channel that joins Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. The two peninsulas are connected by the Mackinac Bridge.

Though Michigan has developed a diverse economy, it is widely known as the center of the U.S. automotive industry, being home to the country’s three major automobile companies (whose headquarters are all located within the Detroit metropolitan area). Though sparsely populated, the Upper Peninsula is economically important due to its status as a tourist destination as well as its abundance of natural resources, while the Lower Peninsula is a center of manufacturing, services, and high-tech industry.

Michigan, The Great Lakes State Facts:

Capital: Lansing

Admission to Statehood: January 26,1837 26th State

Flag: The design on Michigan’s deep blue field has three mottoes: On a red ribbon – “One Nation Made Up of Many States”; on a blue shield – “I will Defend” and on a white ribbon – “If You Seek a Pleasant Peninsula, Look Around.”  On the blue shield the sun rises over a lake and peninsula, a man with raised hand and holding a gun represents peace and the ability to defend his rights. The elk and moose are symbols of Michigan, while the eagle represents the United States.

Bird: American Robin

Flower: Apple Blossom

Largest Cities: Detroit, Grand Rapids, Warren

It is the flag, once again, that inspires our Michigan Block.  With a minimalist interpretation and a bit of creativity, I think the center emblem becomes an M for Mich1gan…. What do you think?
