Spring Medallion: Twisted Ribbon Border

We have been off on Spring Break this week but class resumes on Monday. Now we are ready for the next round of our Spring Medallion: The Twisted Ribbon.

This Twisted Ribbon border is the reason we are doing this Spring Medallion Quilt. One of our class members, Fran, used this on one of her quilts and it was so wonderful, I decided I had to teach the method… with the hearty encouragement of other class members!
Despite how complicated the border looks, it is really quite simple. Just one block! Okay… One block and some Half Square Triangles in the corners. Your quilt top should be 40 1/2″ after adding the Appliqué Border. So this border will need 10 of these little (4″) blocks on each side. And the good news is each block is only three pieces… 2 quarter square triangles and a half square triangle.
To add a similar border to another quilt, you need to add an even number of blocks to each side of the quilt to complete the pattern. So, measure the quilt center and use the measurement to decide how many and what size of Twisted Ribbon blocks to use. Keep in mind, you could add a spacer border if necessary. So if your quilt was 58 1/2″ square, you could add a 1 1/2″ cut spacer border to bring the quilt to 60 1/2″. If you made 3″ finished TR blocks, you would need 20 on each side. If you made bold 5″ blocks, you would need just 12 blocks on each side. 4″ blocks would not work because you’d need 15 which is an odd number and the design would not work out properly.
