Spring Medallion – The Spacer Border

Spacer borders are often vital to attaining the desired look of a quilt. This is especially true for Medallion Quilts since they are all borders!

There are two main reasons for adding a spacer border to a design. First we add a little (or big!) border to bring the center up to size so a pieced border will fit and/or so the border will be of a size that is easily divisible so the needed blocks can have “cuttable” measurements. The first (dark) border of our Spring Medallion was sized so the Flying Geese border would fit.
The second reason to add a Spacer Border to your quilt is for design purposes, such as when two lovely borders are next to each other and they need a little breathing space between to allow each to shine. This is the purpose of this week’s Spacer Border. The border of background fabric keeps our Twisted Ribbon border and our Pieced Scallop border from bumping up against each other.
