Spring Medallion: Mitering the Corners of the Applique Border

20120324-112345.jpg

Charlotte, a class member and great quilter, offered to show us her favorite method of mitering the corners of our Applique Border on the Spring Medallion Quilt. This is a great method and Charlotte has done a wonderful job with her instructions.

Mitering is easier than you might think. It is also sort of the Holy Grail in quiltmaking. For this method, in a nutshell, you stitch on your side borders centered, raw edge to raw edge. Then stitch on your top and bottom, also centered but this time just from seam to seam of the side borders. Then, with the quilt right side up and flat, fold the side border at a 45 degree angle and line up the border edges. Press (The crease will be your stitching guide.)* Here you can use one pin. Now flip the quilt again and fold the quilt at a 45 degree angle while laying the borders out straight. Stitch in the crease and you’ve got a perfect miter. OF course there is a little more to it, but Charlotte’s instructions are very good and illustrated!

Now I have always had a hard time with mitering. So I am looking forward to trying Charlotte’s method. But I thought I would also offer my instructions for what I called a Faux Miter:
I get to the point with the * above, then I hand applique that folded edge!
But I am going to try Charlotte’s method. I’ll let you know how it goes. If you have a mitering method you like, please comment below and let us all in on your secret!

Charlotte’s Nearly Pinless Mitering

I just tried Charlotte’s method and it really works!  WOW!  Thanks, Charlotte!

And for the Fleur de lis in the Border Corner: This will cover any problems with your miters!
