Ray’s Finds – Marie Webster’s Morning Glories

Our dear friend Ray has recently been hitting the Mother Lode of quilts as he visits local flea markets. His finds have been so extraordinary, I have asked him to share some with us! So here are pics of his first and very fortunate find…

Ray unearthed this wonderful rendition of Marie Webster’s Morning Glories design early one morning at a SoCal Swap Meet. It is completely hand appliqued and marvelously hand quilted. Yes, it’s a bit faded (The green vine has morphed to a gentle khaki), but still a true gem!

The quilt is child size, perhaps 40″ X 55″, with the morning glories arranged in an oval design. This may have even been from a kit! And the quilting….

Ohhh… The Quilting….

The Hand Quilting is MAGNIFICENT! Cross Hatching and Feathered Wreaths… It is just yummy!

The original Marie Webster quilt is in the collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art…

The Gallery Label reads:

“It must be ‘early to bed and early to rise’ for the child who would see the sweet morning glory in all its loveliness, as it must be found before all the dew is gone. Then, too, this delicate flower always curls up and goes to sleep before sunset.” (Marie Daugherty Webster in Ladies Home Journal, August 1912.) This quilt is signed and dated “For Ladies Home Journal“, 1912. Marie D. Webster

Notice the color/value change of the background outside the applique. Even the Morning Glories then change color!

With this precipitous beginning, Ray has continued haunting antique faires and swap meets and garage sales, searching out other wonderful quilts. Check back next week for another of Ray’s Finds!
