Muzeo Exhibit Quilts Continued

(On February 12, I will be speaking in Covina, CA at the TLC Quilt Guild. Please join us for a wonderfully Quilty evening! And on March 10 I’ll be at Orange County Quilters Guild near Disneyland.  More on that soon)
We are nearing the finish line on this fabulous quilt exhibit at the Muzeo in Anaheim, CA.  The exhibit closes on Sunday, February 15.

Our journey continues with quilts from the last century… That is, the 20th century.

This wonderful example of the old Mountain Mist Daffodil Quilt is STUNNING!

Look at that quilting!  And the applique is stuffed!  The pattern was originally published on the back of the label of the Mountain Mist Batting.  The idea was when buying batting for your current quilt, you would also find a pattern for your next quilt!  A brilliant marketing gimmick I wish they would do that today!  And in fact, it is done… most fabric companies offer wonderful patterns free on their websites.  Even I offer free patterns on my Craftsy site…

By the dawn of the twentieth century, fabric was readily available as were quilt patterns.  Patterns were published in the newspapers, on batting wrappers and also available through the mail.

The depression era of the 1930s somehow brought about some of the most iconic quilt designs known. Grandma’s flower garden and the Dresden Plate (above) are two designs while not really designed during this time certainly are very indicative of the era. I love the bright pastels of those days.

And then there was Marie Webster.  Her beautiful applique quilt designs were published in the Ladies Home Journal starting in 1911.  This Poppy design first appeared in the January 1912 LHJ issue.

Marie wrote “Quilts, Their Story and How To Make Them” (1915) which is recognized as the first quilt book.  Marie founded her own successful pattern company in 1921.

Soon, there were many other quilt designers who sold their patterns through ads and publications.  This fabulous Alphabet quilt is from one such pattern by the Ladies Art Company, one of the largest Quilt Pattern companies of their time.

This delicate quilt is a States quilt… Showing the state flower of each of our United States. (Great idea for a Block of the Week… States of Modern!)  The design is by Ruby Short McKim, another well-known and prolific quilt pattern designer of this era.  Isn’t it simply beautiful?

I know I missed a few of the quilts from this glorious display. I hope someday to visit the International Quilt Study Center and Museum in Lincoln, NE and to share more of their lovely collection here.
