Mid Century Modern Sampler Quilt: Block Seven Citrus Leaves
The leaf. Symbol of Life. Symbol of Growth. Symbol of Spring. Ancient. Simple, easily recognizable and very Modern!
Here where I live in Southern California, the Mid Century era was marked by a housing boom of tremendous proportions. The orange groves that had been so prevalent here in Orange County were plowed up and replaced by homes. With that explosion and the advent of the Green Movement as a result, it is not surprising that the leaf shape is one of the popular motifs of the Mid-Century era.
Repeating the simple motif gives it rhythm and presence. So here is my interpretation of the leaf motif.
