What happened to January? Where did it go? Welcome February! Our in-class swap this month (this WEEK!) is for Polka Dots. And the vintage pattern for this swap is Jewel Box or Buckeye Beauty.
This Jewel Box Quilt is another made by my husband’s grandmother. I’m not sure of the exact year it was made but sometime before 1972 is my understanding. And it is GLORIOUS! All hand pieced and hand quilted, each block is made from just the background and one print. But throw all those blocks together and you get a magnificent jewel of a quilt!
The block, No. 1312 in the Brackman Encyclopedia, has other fun names including Hour Glass, Railroad Crossing, World’s Fair, Jacob’s Ladder, Double Four Patch, New Four Patch (published by Farm and Fireside in 1884!), Buckeye Beauty and Going To Chicago. The Jewel Box name for this block was popularized by Eleanor Burns in the late 1990’s but the pattern, as you can see, goes WAY back.
Barbara Brackman lists this Great Block of four of the smaller blocks together as Irish Chain…Interesting!
With many thanks to Grandma and her needle skills, I have patterned this quilt in three sizes to be made from a collection of 10″ squares (from a swap, a purchased layer cake/Hoffman Cracker collection, a grouping of Fat Quarters or from your stash like Grandma did!) The only thing you need yardage for is the background and the border. What will you name your version of Grandma’s Quilt?

This is the second of four patterns I am doing to celebrate the legacy of my husband’s grandmother. Last month, it was Grandma’s Victory and next month it will be Bow Tie, then in April we will do a modern day Grandma’s Flower Garden. Wow!

II started a Jewel Box quilt today after finding your pattern last night. It is for my grandson, 27 (I know he’ll get married some day and this will be his gift), using a black background and bright fruit and vegetable prints because he loves to cook.
Thanks for another lovely pattern Lyn. I have a stash of spots and dots and I think I may use it to make this goreous quilt.
Like the new logo…I was looking for a swan or a turtle or a pug
That is what I think of with you. But it is nice with the needle &
thread.
I have an antique blue and white quilt with this pattern. I’ve wanted to make a replica of the quilt for years. It’s one of my favorites. Thank you for the pattern!
Love your new logo!
