We are ready for the BORDER on our Mid Century Modern quilt! And the border is…

Color Blocks! We are repeating (or re-interpreting!) the design of the Tustin Color Block, this time using the Background as the “Sashing” instead of the Light, making a fine finish to our Mid Century design.

Mid Century Modern Sampler Quilt Setting Instructions (Corrected 6/16 7:30 pm)

I’ve been doing this (making and designing quilts) long enough (15+ years!) to know I always feel this way… But… Didn’t we just start this Sampler Quilt with the Sputnik Block? And here we are finishing it off! Or, well, at least setting all the different sized blocks together!

Mid Century Modern Quilt Block 19 MicroChips And Transistors

Note: There was an error on original pattern (SB Cut 36 ea. 1 1/2″ (NOT 2 1/2″) squares). Corrected PDF available below) I wish I could explain here in simple terms all about Transistors and MicroChips… What they are, how they work and how they differ. But I can’t… Because, despite some research, I just don’t understand.

Mid Century Modern Sampler Quilt Block 18 Calder Mobile

Our previous block was inspired by artist Piet Mondrian (Tustin Color Block) and this block is inspired by artist Alexander Calder. Similarly, Calder was influenced (or as Wikipedia says “shocked”) by Mondrian to embrace abstract art. Lucky for us!

Mid Century Modern Sampler Quilt Block 15 Palm Springs Mountains

OH! Here is a Surprise SECOND MCM block for the week!

Palm Springs is the epicenter of the Mid Century Modern Revival. The desert town sprouted up during the post war era and there is Mid Century Architecture all over town. But for many, the most stunning feature of Palm Springs are the fabulous San Jacinto Mountains the city is nestled against. It is these mountains this block honors.
