Buffalo Nickel Swap Quilt

OK… It may sound like a silly idea… A Buffalo Quilt?  We were talking in class one day about a town in the midwest that had displayed plaster (maybe resin?) cows that local artists had embellished.  That discussion led to this quilt with Americana Buffalo!

Did you know it is the 101st anniversary of the first minting of the Buffalo Nickel? Or that some coins were minted with the Buffalo having only three legs!?  Fun stories to incorporate into your own Buffalo Nickel Quilt!

This quilt is based upon a class swap of 10″ squares of Americana Prints.  But you could gather 8-12 quarter yard pieces along with the Background and Border fabrics to make this 77″ X 77″ quilt.  A little bit of piecing (9-Patches) and a bit of applique make this a wonderful project.  My mock-up has all the buffalo made from the same fabric… I know it will be cuter with lots of different fabrics!
