Antiquing At The Orange Circle

20130722-133636.jpg

I had a lot of fun recently, haunting the antique stores right here in Orange County, all around the Orange Circle at Chapman and Glassell.  There is always something fascinating to look at when in an antique store, and of course, I seek out the quilts and textile pieces.  There were a few gems in Orange this time!

The 1930s spider web quilt, above, was just yummy with its pink setting.  See the pink stars?  And lots of wonderful vintage fabrics.

This Blue and Pink is a summer spread, no batting, and all those shapes are hand appliqued to the white background.  At about 30″ X 40″ this was certainly a baby or child’s quilt and it is in remarkable shape.  I find those trios of appliqued squares particularly interesting… see how the innermost row is larger than the outer row. What a great detail!  Or was the quilter just short on fabric?

Here’s an improved 9-Patch with lots of skillfully done curved piecing.  The 9-Patches feature the same color of solid fabric in the outer middle patch and prints in the corners.  Then there is that pink again! It really packs a wallop.  This one was truly a masterpiece!

The sweetest quilt of the day was the Sweet Pea.  Made with batting that lumped up (Technical Quilting Term) this lovely quilt is still a treasure. Great hand applique and lovely solid colors.

Here seems to be a generational quilt.  The center has kind of a Checkerboard on point block in circa 1890-1910 fabrics then that border was added by a future generation… and only on two sides.  I like that border… and I’d like it more, perhaps, on another quilt!  But when you leave a UFO, you can’t determine what future generations will do with it!

And I’ll leave you with this deplorable pic of this cheery citrus block.  Oranges, Lemons and Limes on a quilt that truly screams Orange County!  And very nicely done with those tiny stems embroidered by a talented needle worker.  Another wonderful detail!

And in case you are interested, I didn’t purchase any of these quilts.  So if you are smitten by one of them, hurry down to Orange and snap it up!

Or make your own version of one of these fabulous quilts… but maybe finish your UFOs first!
